Friday 15th to Saturday 16th November 2024

Friday 15th. Low cloud brought in on a moderate WSW'ly meant there was no flying.

Saturday 16th.  The passage of a weak cold front during the morning, left the site in an increasingly cold,  light to moderate, NW'ly flow, the start of flying being delayed  until around midday as the skies slowly cleared.  Thereafter, 11 launches were flown, 4 via AT and 7 via the winch, including 3 by private owners, with John Carter/Kelly Teagle starting off proceedings with a brief weather check in K21 JVZ.  3 flights exceeded 30 minutes, with Austin Hartland having 41 minutes in Astir DSU off an AT  and Bob Calvert in his Discus 2ct and Fred Brown in his Ventus 2ct both having over 2 hours off winch launches as they climbed in wave to around 9-10,000' asl.  Details of  the day's flying are limited as the Flarm transceiver was still giving problems, but Bob confirmed engine use was required to contact the wave which took him to 9,500' asl as he visited Richmond and Wetherby before returning to Sutton.  I have less information on Fred's flight but what I have indicates he spent a significant time hill soaring the main bowl before setting off west and contacting the wave W of Thirsk and then going furter W towards Masham and then S to Harrogate N.  Fred then returned to site after flying to the E of Northallerton but I have no details of his maximum altitude.  Both Bob and Fred supplied photos from the day which are attached below.
