Monday 27th. A moderate WSW'ly blew all day, the generally cloudy skies providing convective lift but also showers in the late afternoon that resulted in the end of flying after 23 ATs off runway 24, runway 20 also being used for landings. Club members and visitors from the Surrey Hills GC enjoyed a day of mainly thermal soaring with the ridge also providing some lift, 14 of the day's flights exceeding 30 minutes with 10 over an hour. By far the longest flight was Clive Swain's 9:06 in his Kestrel 19, initial hill soaring soon replaced by thermal soaring up to a maximum altitude of 4,800' asl with excursions up to 20+ kms from site. Bob Calvert took 3 cloud climbs in his 5:50 flight, the highest being to 8,200' asl as he visited areas around Northallerton, Masham and Ripon in his Discus 2t, again after an inital period of hill soaring, while Bill Payton, flying his DG1000t solo, also visited Masham and Northallerton areas but in addition, went further west to Aysgarth and further east to Guisborough in his flight of just over 4 hrs. Other pilots to have over 4 hrs included Fred Brown in his Ventus ct, 4:29 and Dean Crosby in his LS10t with just over 5 hrs, both remaining relatively local. John Marsh in his DG303 had just under 2 hrs, with 1-1.5 hours being the duration for Chris Handzlik in his DG300, Dan McClean in Astir DPO, visitors Malcom Kerlow?/Darren Edwards in their club's Twin Astir and Jason Barton in his club's Junior, all of whom stayed local while Steve Thompson in Astir FSH visited Black Hambleton and the environs of Northallerton. The longest of the club 2 seater flights saw Ian McFarlane/David Hamilton have 51 minutes in K21 KLW, in this case mainly using hill lift in the main bowl.
Tuesday 28th. An Atlantic depression sent its frontal systems across the UK, the resulting low cloud and rain from 2pm resulting in no flying taking place.
