Thursday 18th to Friday 19th May 23

Thursday 18th. A light to moderate SSE'ly veered into the W around midday, with cloud amounts varying between overcast and broken, the day's 12 ATs being flown initially off runway 20 before switching to runway 24. The only flight of over 30 minutes was by visitor Malc Guard in his Ka6 who had 1:50, initially using some weak thermals to climb to 2,600' asl, but then spending time between 4-600' QFE soaring the SW facing part of the main bowl. There were only 4 flights of 20 minutes or more, the longest being that of Paul Whitehead in K21 JVZ with one of the day's 5 First Flight pupils, Paul finding some bits and pieces of lift on the main bowl to delay his descent.
Friday 19th. A weak and slow moving cold front brought low cloud and light rain to the area from 0700-1300 hrs before clearing away to the south, allowing its associated cloud to slowly break up. Andrew Watson flew the 3 First Flight pupils of the day in K21 JVZ in the early afternoon, before Bob Calvert in his Discus 2ct took off from runway 02 into a light to moderate NNE'ly to complete the launch total for the day. After having to use his engine to stay airborne, Bob found some weak wave downwind of the forward ridge between Felixkirk and Knayton, that kept him between 2,600 and 4,000' asl for the majority of his 2:54 flight.
